Margaret Smith MSP has welcomed an overall increase in the number of qualified social workers in Scotland, but called on Ministers to make sure that social work resources are targeted at improving child protection across the country.

Smith welcomes Queensferry Churches Care in the Community to Parliament

Following the publication of their recent research, ‘The Long and Winding Road,’ into services for adults with learning difficulties, Margaret Smith MSP welcomed members of Queensberry Churches Care in the Community (QCCC) to Parliament to present their report to MSPs. The research found that carers and adults with learning difficulties in rural west Edinburgh felt that there were not enough local services for them.

During Question Time and a Debate in the Scottish Parliament today, MSP for Edinburgh West Margaret Smith praised the continuing success and variety of Edinburgh’s festivals and called on the Scottish Government to ensure they were properly supported through the economic downturn.

Education Secretary burying head in sand over class size challenge

Commenting as Edinburgh City Council calls on the Scottish Government to close the legal loophole on class sizes, MSP for Edinburgh West Margaret Smith said: “We know that Ministers didn't give councils any new money to reduce class sizes.  But Edinburgh City Council is the latest local authority to show that the SNP also failed to provide the necessary legal protection.”

Margaret Smith MSP, John Barrett MP and their staff today met with staff from the Council’s West Neighbourhood Team, who provide a range of vital services to the Edinburgh West area, such as environmental work, community safety and housing.

Telford College Update

Margaret Smith has met with Telford College Deputy Principal Greg Irvine to discuss concerns raised by staff and students at the College about the planned redundancies and course changes. Margaret received assurances from the Deputy Principal that the College was working with the Unions to find a way to avoid compulsory redundancies, increase productivity at the College and end the threat to jobs and courses. Margaret also joined Union and staff representatives who were demonstrating outside the Scottish Parliament.

Lack of grading serious concern for school leavers

Commenting on the announcement of a new national set of exams to replace standard grades, Margaret Smith MSP said: “The Cabinet Secretary could have been much clearer in her statement. It has left many questions unanswered about the future of children’s education in Scotland.”
