Margaret Smith MSP

Margaret Smith MSP for Edinburgh West

What is the best thing about being an MSP?

The best thing about being an MSP is that you get to help constituents and communities. Sometimes that might be helping an individual with a problem, sometimes it’s working on a piece of legislation, but every single day in some way or another you can make a difference. It means I never, ever forget why I went into politics in the first place which was to make the place I lived a better place to be. It’s also an interesting job because the issues we cover change all the time, so you’re always learning new things and meeting new people. I speak in local schools a great deal and when I do I warn all the kids that homework doesn’t stop when you finish school. Right now I am the Lib Dem party spokesperson on Education and Young People but over my ten years as an MSP I’ve covered Health, Justice, Transport and Local Government as well so it’s always changing.
