Margaret Smith MSP for Edinburgh West

4 February 2010

Smith visits Haggeye

Margaret Smith MSP for Edinburgh West today met Haggeye at the Scottish Parliament. The Scottish Parliament's Community Partnerships Project is an initiative to give a voice to people who are typically under-represented in political life and is delighted that Haggeye spent this week visiting the Parliament.

Haggeye is a project which works across Scotland to bring young people aged 12 to 25 together to make a difference by successfully campaigning for accessible services, facilities and opportunities for young people with sight loss. The project is supported by RNIB Scotland and The Big Lottery.

Commenting on the project Smith said:

"It was great fun to meet Haggeye today and get a better understanding of the project. Loss of sight can have far-reaching consequences for the person affected and for their family and friends. It is crucial that young people with sight loss do have access to the services and facilities which they need as well as to opportunities which many of us take for granted.

"This Parliament prides itself on being accessible and we regularly welcome young people from across the country who visit. So I'm delighted that the Parliament's Community Partnerships Project and the Haggeye team have worked together to highlight issues around political under-representation as well as the difficulties faced by young people with sight loss."
