Smith urges Elderly to take steps to beat bogus callers

Margaret Smith and Mike Crockart have welcomed up-to-date guidance issued by the West Neighbourhood Team about dealing with bogus callers after fresh concerns were raised recently. Commenting local MSP Margaret Smith said:

“Bogus callers can be a nuisance for anyone, but older people are particularly vulnerable.

“We need to make sure that those being targeted have the information they need to feel confident about their rights, and safe in their homes.

“The Liberal Democrat team in Edinburgh West is supporting the drive to make local residents aware of the issue and how to deal with it.”

Mike Crockart MP, a former policeman, called for people to heed the advice being given out by the West Neighbourhood Team saying:

“Cold and bogus callers have always been a problem, and sadly those most vulnerable are often targeted. People should only answer the door if they feel comfortable doing so; if they do decide to open the door then they should put the door chain on and ask for the caller’s ID.

“Doorstep crime can cause emotional, financial and physical suffering and we want to help stamp it out.”

Both Smith and Crockart are calling for extra vigilance in the coming weeks to help to stop bogus calling in the city. If you are suspicious, you can phone the police on 0131 311 3131 or if it’s an emergency 999. If you wish to call anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. But, the advice is simple; ‘If in doubt, keep them out!’
