Smith slams Network Rail’s lack of support
Margaret Smith MSP for Edinburgh West has spoken out against Network Rail’s lack of support for the Forth Rail Bridge’s bid to be awarded World Heritage site status after it appeared on the UK’s Tentative List. The rail operator has raised concerns that the move would impose additional burdens on its ability to operate the bridge. Commenting Smith said:
“Network Rail’s lack of support for the bid is short-sighted and selfish.
“The bridge is the focal point of communities like South Queensferry and has had a massive impact on families in the area for over a century.
“By not supporting the bid Network Rail is ignoring the potential economic and tourism benefits as well as failing to recognise the Forth Rail Bridge’s global significance and place in history.
“I hope that Network Rail will think again about its decision and get behind this bid.”
Margaret Smith has written to Network Rail expressing her disappointment at the company’s stance and has also contacted John Penrose MP, Minister for Tourism and Heritage, to lend her support to the UK’s Tentative List and the Forth Rail Bridge’s bid in particular.
