Margaret Urges Older Constituents
to use Helpline
27/11/06
All across Scotland, older people are benefiting from
a range of
Scottish Executive policies. Local MSP Margaret Smith is urging local
residents to make sure they know what they are entitled to and to phone
the Older People's Helpline on 0845 125 9732.
Margaret says, "When I was Convenor of the
Scottish Parliament's Health
Committee I fought hard for free personal and nursing care for
Scotland's elderly and I was delighted when we passed the legislation
in
2002 that made it a reality. Free personal and nursing care has
benefited nearly 50,000 people so far, allowing many older people to
be
cared for in their homes ad many others to live without fear of losing
their homes. This means that Scottish pensioners are better off than
their counterparts elsewhere in the UK.
The UK Government are only now following the Scottish
Executive's free
national concessionary travel scheme which has been taken up by one
million older Scots already.
Meanwhile, through the Executive's Central Heating
Programme and the
Warm Deal thousands of older Scots have received central heating
systems, loft and pipe insulation, draught proofing and advice.
Margaret says: "Sometimes people aren't
sure if they are entitled to
these schemes. If you are in any doubt call the Helpline. Meanwhile if
you have any other issues we could help you with please call me on 317
7292."
