Row over independence of judges ‘unprecedented’
27/9/07
Commenting on a row between the Lord Advocate and the Lord Justice General
on the independence of Scotland’s judiciary, Liberal Democrat Justice
spokesperson Margaret Smith MSP, said: “A public disagreement of
this nature between the Lord Advocate and Scotland’s most senior
judge is unprecedented. Many people will be concerned at any claim that
the independence of the judiciary is under threat.
“The independence of the judiciary is a cornerstone of our civil liberties.
Everyone responsible for the administration of justice, including all the political
parties, have a responsibility for protecting and enhancing the autonomy of Scotland’s
judges. The Liberal Democrats will do just this as we scrutinise
the upcoming Judiciary Bill.”
