Smith calls for action to tackle reoffending
10/10/07
Margaret Smith MSP has called on the Scottish
Government to take action to replace, where appropriate, very short
term prison sentences with community sentences. Official figures
have revealed that two thirds of criminals released from jail are reconvicted
within two years. Commenting, Mrs Smith said
“If we want to cut crime in Scotland, we
must address these high re-offending rates. I want to see very short
term prison sentences replaced, where appropriate, with tougher community
sentences that make offenders work to repay their crimes and have a
proven track record in cutting re-offending.
“I am heartened to hear that the Justice Secretary
is ‘reviewing’ current
sentencing policy, but would urge the Scottish Government not to drag
its heels on this subject. We need action, not just warm words
from the Minister.”
