Smith calls for permanent hovercraft service
across Forth
26/10/07
Margaret Smith MSP has urged on the Scottish Government to support a
permanent hovercraft service across the Forth. The service was trialled
this summer and the financial analysis by Stagecoach published yesterday
has confirmed a clear business case for the launch of a permanent crossing.
Commenting on the Stagecoach report, the Edinburgh West MSP said:
“I was really pleased to hear that Stagecoach
have confirmed a clear business case for a permanent cross-Forth hovercraft
service. The trial of the service which took place during the summer
was hugely successful, and strongly supported by communities on both
sides of the river.
“A hovercraft service is an innovative
and environmentally sustainable method of cross-Forth transport, which
would increase the range of travel options for commuters between Edinburgh
and Fife and help to reduce congestion by encouraging people to leave
their cars behind.
“I would like to see the Scottish Government
expand on the success of the initial trial and give its full support
and backing to a permanent hovercraft service across the Forth.”
