More must be done on Scots military
deaths
14/12/07
Margaret Smith MSP has commented on the news that officials from the
Scottish and Westminster Governments met today to discuss procedures
for handling the deaths of Scottish military personnel killed overseas.
Currently military deaths overseas are examined by an English coroner
and there is no legal provision under Scots law to probe the deaths of
Scottish personnel who die abroad.
Commenting, Mrs Smith said:
“It’s about time that the Government
took this issue seriously.
“I have raised this issue time and time
again and only now are the SNP making any moves on it.
“I want to see a system in place to allow
the deaths of Scottish soldiers that are killed abroad to be examined
in Scotland.”
