Shock DNA figures more evidence
against database
28/1/08
Following reports that Scotland’s national
database contains the DNA of 4790 teenagers aged 16 and younger, Margaret
Smith MSP has called on the Scottish Government to resist calls for
the DNA system to be changed to allow DNA to be retained without convictions.
Commenting, the Edinburgh West MSP said:
“These figures are alarming and yet more
evidence why Scotland should not go down the route taken south of the
border, where over 140,000 people, including 25,000 children are on
the national DNA database despite never having been charged with a
criminal offence.
“It is unacceptable for the DNA of a child
who commits a minor offence when they are young to be retained for
the rest of their lives.
“The UK Government wants everyone’s data to be recorded
on a giant database to run their discredited, expensive ID card scheme. Recent
events, including the loss of 25 million people’s personal information,
including bank account details, have shown quite clearly that the Westminster
Government cannot be trusted to protect our privacy.”
