Government must keep close watch
on Forth Bridge congestion
11/2/08
Margaret Smith MSP has called for close monitoring
of traffic levels on and around the Forth Bridge following today’s
abolition of the bridge tolls. Studies have shown that the removal
of tolls could lead to an increase of up to 21% in the traffic using
the bridge, causing increased congestion and longer queues.
Commenting, the Edinburgh West MSP said:
“While I welcome
the benefits which the toll removal will bring for many commuters in
the area, I’m sure that many will also share my concerns about
the impact on the local traffic and the environment.
“Having pressed the Transport Minister
throughout the passage of the Abolition of Bridge Tolls Bill for action
to tackle potential traffic and environmental problems, I am pleased
that the Government have committed to creating a priority bus lane.
“Nevertheless, it is essential that traffic
levels on the bridge are closely monitored and that any problems resulting
from toll abolition are dealt with quickly and effectively by the Scottish
Government.”
